L’abbiamo incontrata all’indomani della conclusione della festa mariana per farci raccontare questa storia incredibile. è il 2019, i due sono in vacanza a Tropea, è il mese di maggio e in Calabria il sole inizia a scaldare.

Mamma Michelina, come la chiamavano in molti, è stata Fondatrice insieme ad altri Crotonesi della Società Parrocchiale ”Madonna di Capocolonna”. Forse proprio lei ha messo nel cuore di Elisabeth il desiderio di andare alla ricerca dei suoi parenti crotonesi. Spinti dall’entusiasmo i due americani arrivano nel cuore della città ed entrano nella libreria di Paolo Cerrelli. Tra un libro e l’altro chiedono informazioni sulla famiglia Castelliti.
Per i loro interlocutori non è difficile rintracciare l’architetto Antonio Castelliti, noto professionista in città che subito raggiunge i due per un indimenticabile ricongiungimento. Il caso vuole che tutto accade nel mese dedicato a Maria. Elisabeth e Donnie vivono quei giorni di festa, acquistano anche una icona della Madonna di Capocolonna, e si ripromettono di tornarci l’anno dopo. La pandemia purtroppo ha scombussolato i loro piani per ben due anni di fila.
Ma questa volta ce l’hanno fatta e hanno partecipato alle celebrazioni mariane insieme al loro cugino Antonio e la moglie Angela De Filippis che da bravi ciceroni, hanno accompagnato la coppia in questi giorni alla scoperta della città e soprattutto delle proprie origini. «We love Crotone» ripete Elisabeth che, pensando alla sua bisnonna, già sa che tornerà l’anno prossimo.
